In the late eighties, Kathleen Hanna (of Bikini Kill) was busy making flyers about the politics calling women sluts, and handing those flyers out at high school. Cracking open the everyday tracks that kept grrrls down and doubting themselves was urgent to her. At the time, Kathleen was a student at the Evergreen State Collage in Olympia, WA., and first felt the scratch of canonized sexism when she dared challenge to her professor acceptance for the class to read Aristotle’s De Poetica- which equates women with slaves and says both are wholly useless. These are one of the experiences that lead a grrrl to riot. She started a new wave of young radical (punk) feminist . Her idea’s we’re to be true to herself and her community. What really stared the riot grrrl was after Time and or Newsweek came out with one of those “feminism is dead” issues around 1990. This basically pissed of Kathleen and started her band, Bikini Kill in hopes that music would get across to grrrls about feminism. Most today think riot grrrls and feminism was this big huge thing and its all over now, and there is nothing left for any grrrl to do to help. Like all those “Girls Kick Ass” and “Girls Rule” shirts, what a great idea riot? But it’s already been done.. so what’s left? They first stared just by casting art shows of galleries full of feminist art and speaking there ideas. They never raised enough money into getting much publicity to the subject. So that’s when all the bands came along, for example Bikini Kill, Babes In Toyland, The Gits,& Bratmobile. . Hole is NOT! And my personal opinion, Courtney Love is NOT a riot grrrl, or much of a feminist. Courtney Love never started anything but a trend! And the wrong ideas. They we’re just there at the right time. Kathleen would ask bands like Nirvana, Melvins to play shows, only cause they support the subject, but they themselves we’ent making enough money and couldn’t do it anyway.
